The Days of the Week
Monday = lunedì
Tuesday = martedì
Wednesday = mercoledì
Thursday = giovedì
Friday = venerdì
Saturday = sabato
Sunday = domenica
Take note that in Italian “dì” makes a “di” sound in ‘dip’.
So, for example, lunedi is roughly pronounced as loo-neh-di.
The days of the week find their origins in Roman deities, closely connected and named after planets in the solar system
lunedì = from Luna = Moon
martedì = from Marte = Mars
mercoledì = from Mercurius = Mercury
giovedì = from Giove = Jupiter
venerdì = from Venere = Venus
sabato = from Saturno = Saturn
domenica = from Dominus = Master
Unlike in English, the days of the week, the months of the year and the seasons in Italian are not capitalised.
Here are some examples of the days of the week in sentences:
Vado a Roma venerdì = I’m going to Rome on Friday
Vado al cinema martedì = I’m going to the movies on Tuesday
Vado in palestra mercoledì mattina alls dieci = I’m going to the gym on Wednesday morning at 10am
Vado al centro commerciale sabato pomeriggio = I’m going to the shopping centre on Saturday afternoon
